By the 1990s, NOAH had more detailed records that pinpointed the location and direction of tornados. Until the 1980s, records for tornadoes were handwritten or typewritten on pages. NOAA has a data dase of all tornadoes going back to 1950. Thousands of people were without power for days. The Federal Emergency Management Agency visited 159 homes in Bridgeport, listing 51 as affected, 52 as suffering from minor damage, 55 as suffering from major damage and one location was considered destroyed. In June 2014, a tornado torn through parts of Bridgeport and Stratford with 110 mph winds. The most destructive storm happened in July 1989 when two tornadoes torn through Hamden and parts of Litchfield County killing two people, injuring 50 and caused more than $100 million in damage. Once a tornado warning is issued people are advised to go to the lowest level of the house or in an interior hallway with no windows. ![]() The National Weather Service says most of the tornadoes happen in late afternoon. Ten of the 15 tornados happened in July the earliest tornado was in late May. Over the next few months we will be in the peak of the Connecticut tornado season. ![]()
