A working knowledge of history and that particular time period, however, is helpful in following all the story lines, and also understanding what the end of Elizabeth’s reign meant for the world. In this incarnation, they work together in atypical pairings and more than a few stories are woven together but it is easily understandable by those who are not familiar with all of the Marvel lore that comes before it. Like most Marvel stories, the world is going to end unless our beloved super heroes figure out a way to save it in time. The eight-issue series takes place in a world where Marvel superheroes exist in the Elizabethean era. The story of Marvel 1602 incorporates many Marvel favorites and transposes them into the world of 1602, at the end of the reign of Elizabeth I of England and the start of James I’s reign upon her death. In MARVEL 1602, award-winning writer Neil Gaiman presents a unique vision of the Marvel Universe set four hundred years in the past. Marvel 1602 is a Marvel Comics limited series first published in 2003. Good news for me, Marvel 1602, the compendium of the first 8 issues, has the entire transcript in the back! This made the transition from traditional printed material to comic much smoother! Unlike a stage play, however, you have to follow the flow of the dialogue in an illustrated manner, therefore, the reading is not linear in anyway. Reading a comic takes a bit of getting used to – it’s almost like reading a stage play in the sense that there is only dialogue and no descriptions – it’s all illustrated in the frames of the comic.
